About this property

Welcome to Dungallan Country House

Set in a grand Victorian house built in 1870 as the Duke of Argyll’s summer residence, Dungallan Country House offers a traditional guesthouse experience on the waterfront of the Sound of Kerrera. This historic property combines period charm with modern conveniences such as free Wi-Fi, free parking, and a bar/lounge. It provides a relaxed atmosphere with no air conditioning or fitness facilities, catering to guests seeking a peaceful retreat rather than a full-service hotel.

The guesthouse is situated within an 11-minute walk of Oban’s ferry terminal and town shops, placing it conveniently close to local amenities while maintaining a tranquil setting. Nearby attractions include McCaig’s Tower, Dunollie Museum and Castle, and Dunstaffnage Castle, all offering cultural and natural points of interest. Golf enthusiasts will find Glencruitten Golf Course just over a mile away.

Accommodation includes spacious, comfortably furnished rooms with scenic views over Oban Bay and the surrounding islands, often praised for their elegance and comfort. While the property currently charges for breakfast, complimentary options for guests staying are included, and a restaurant is available on site. Although some guests have noted the lack of on-property meals at times, the afternoon tea and bar service have received positive mentions, particularly the attentive and knowledgeable staff.

Nearby transport options include Glasgow Airport, approximately two hours away by car, making the property accessible for international visitors. While the location is on the town’s outskirts with some hills involved, the setting offers a quiet and private environment suitable for travelers looking for a comfortable base to explore the region’s history and natural beauty. It is best suited to those valuing character, hospitality, and proximity to local sights over extensive hotel amenities.

Beautiful stay, with a great view. The service was wonderful, and the food and drinks were good as well. One of the staff members, Declan, helped us carry our luggage and was very friendly, funny, and polite. We also brought food back from the local Tesco, and they warmed it up for us. We highly recommend staying here.

We had the pleasure of staying at Dungallan Country House and were thoroughly impressed by its charm, comfort, and exceptional hospitality. The property itself is stunning, with spacious rooms and breathtaking views that immediately set the tone for a relaxing retreat. Our room, the Dungallan, was beautifully appointed—generously sized, elegantly furnished, and exceptionally comfortable. The attention to detail in both décor and amenities reflected a high standard throughout. The staff were outstanding. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed. Michelle, the manager, was warm and attentive, creating a friendly and inviting atmosphere. Declan, who runs the bar, stood out for his extensive knowledge of whisky and his personable nature. His easygoing manner and professionalism made every interaction a pleasure—nothing was ever too much trouble. Breakfast each morning was delightful, with a varied and well-prepared selection that catered to all tastes. If you're considering a short getaway, I wholeheartedly recommend Dungallan Country House. It offers not only a beautiful setting but also a level of service that makes you feel truly valued as a guest.

This is a delightful house with lovely bedrooms. It is on the outskirts of town and certainly not walking distance. At the moment the property does not offer meals, which is a major retraction, however, this is due to change. A little expensive for what it offers for those working to a budget.

Like most reviewers here, we loved Dungallan. Comfortable, friendly, great little bar, tasty breakfast. Shout out to Declan, who was our host at the bar most evenings and who was so friendly and accommodating (and full of useless facts). Anything negative? Well, while it is close to town there is a bit of a hill to climb to get back to the property. But that is just an excuse to visit the bar!

We stayed at Dungallan Country House September 10–12, and it was truly unforgettable. Everything about this place exceeded our expectations — from the breathtaking views over Oban Bay to the beautiful historic house itself. The hospitality was outstanding. Our hosts made us feel warmly welcomed, and every detail was thought through with care. We ordered the afternoon seafood and meat platters, which were absolutely phenomenal — fresh, beautifully presented, and perfect to enjoy with the views. A special mention also goes to Declan, the bartender, whose knowledge, charm, and creativity made evenings at the bar a highlight of our stay. The breakfast hosts were equally wonderful — friendly, attentive, and serving delicious breakfasts that set the tone for each day. Dungallan Country House is a perfect blend of elegance, comfort, and genuine Scottish hospitality. We cannot recommend it highly enough and look forward to returning.

I had the pleasure of staying at Dungallan Country House, a former Duke’s residence, and it was truly a memorable experience. Despite being built in the 1870s, the property is absolutely stunning, full of character, and beautifully maintained. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with amazing views overlooking the islands that make the stay feel extra special. The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive, always welcoming and happy to help. Breakfast was superb, with great quality and attention to detail, and the afternoon tea here is simply fabulous — a must-try during your stay. The location is another big plus: it’s only about a 10-minute walk from downtown Oban, close enough to be convenient while still feeling peaceful and private. I also loved the library room, which is perfect for relaxing with a book or getting some work done in a quiet, elegant setting. Private on-property parking is available for guests, which is a great bonus in Oban. Overall, Dungallan Country House offers charm, comfort, and excellent hospitality — I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again and highly recommend it.

We recently stayed at Dungallan Country House in Oban and wish we could give more than 5 stars! The staff were beyond friendly and incredibly accommodating, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. We stayed in the McCaig’s Tower Suite, which was spacious, beautifully decorated, and offered stunning views. Every detail was perfect—from the immaculate cleanliness to the warm hospitality. This is truly a gem in Oban. Highly recommended!
